A month or so ago, I was approached by some Seafest organizer to participate in a ethnic food tasting for the Seafest for this year. Of course, I happily agreed thinking what a nice way to introduce Seafood Thai Pineapple Fried Rice or Fried Udon to the people here. I was all geared up to cook a store.. for at least 100 people who will be tasting my food. But knowing that when it comes to free food, one has gotta prepare more… because I’m sure there will be more people who will be attending seafest.

Little did i know.. that when i agreed to participate in this community service.. i can’t cook in my own kitchen.. and ingredients and other stuff are not provided either. Meaning.. i have to pay for the food .. from my own pocket..?? And cooking at the YMCA kitchen.. is sure inconvenient for me..!! how am i going to marinate.. and cook in a kitchen i am not familiar with..?? what about the pot and pans .. that i have to use..?? chopsticks.. and stuff..?? If i used my own.. is it against the hygiene regulations..??

I would have gladly cooked .. if they would provide the ingredients.. or if i can cook in my own kitchen… but with so much red tape.. i told the lady from the Agriculture department.. that i won’t be able to do it. I really do wanna do the community service.. but truth be told.. i doubt ppl here would appreciate. So i’m not gonna waste my time.. and a few hundred bucks to come up with 100 samples.

Customer walks in.. I laughed the loudest.. he smiles like a good sport.. PB .. he sniggers. Gives 8 bucks to PB .. without needing to say a word. PB took his money, gave back change.. and punched in a few numbers into the computer.. and customer left .. after saying thank you . .and PB said thanks too. Why leh..??

Well.. he rented the same game for the last 12 weeks… or more. Meaning.. dude already paid like at least $100 over bucks for that game.. and already we earned money outta it. Tell me you donch like customer/s like dat leh..??

Customer like dat makes it worthwhile for us to stay open in business.

PB and i confirmed that the lil’ brat of ours.. is street smart but not book smart at all. She can repeat whatever you’ve said.. and remembers it for days.. but she wouldn’t say her 1,2,3 .. or ABCs.

She knows exactly what you are telling her.. and replies smartly .. but refuses to sit and read a book or even have us read a book to her. The longest she ever sat thru’ a reading was like 10mins.. max..!

And really it’s not even that we are lazy.. we try.. and try and coax her.. even by bribing her.. with smarties.. but nope.. she refuses to say .. 1,2,3,4,5. She would say.. only 1, 2, 3, 5, 17, 18 and the strange thing is .. we never taught her 17s and 18s .. so where did she get that from..?? And she is able to count in spanish.. because i caught her repeating after Dora the cartoon.

She remembers to fix her pockets properly.. because “gary is gonna give her money, to be put in her pocket”. See what i mean by being street smart..?? Should we be getting worried..?? oh-oh..!!

Once upon a time.. i would never think of eating leftovers.. because my mother didn’t encouraged it.. when we were young. She said.. it gave us wind in the tummy.. thus making us sick. Well.. we also didn’t have a microwave then.. when we were young.

But these days.. i would meticulously picked out all the meat.. that chloe doesn’t wanna eat.. and put it in a container.. and eat them with my instant noodles..

Once upon a time.. i eat sushi everyday.. ! you can ask my God-daughter, Enna & Sandy.. they both can vouch for me.. coz’ Enna got her first job in this japanese restaurant that i frequent.. because i eat there everyday. And i bring Sandy for company for my meals..

But these days.. i eat only frozen sushi.. and bad (lousy, sub-standard) frozen sushi for the record.

You would think that since this is summer hor.. we will get some really good weather right..?? NOPE.. YER WRONG..!!

Weather suxs so bad..!! it’s either too hot and humid.. or it rains.. or worst thunderstorm.. or the wind is so cold..!! Every year .. we wait for winter to be over.. from as early October .. winter would come.. and doesn’t end till next May, yes.. it’s that long. If you have been reading my blog for a long time, you will see that Chloe is always dressed up real warm .. because of the cold here. And then when you think you will be getting some good ones.. this is what we get… and i’m telling you .. it’s every year..!

It sure suxs..!! i cannot even bring chloe to swim in the beach.. because the wind is either too cold.. or the water is too cold for comfort. Alot of ppl here are so used to the weather. .and they think nothing of sending their kids into the beach and water.. and they wonder why their kids are always sick .. and kenna pneumonia. DUH..!! *shake head*

Well.. the truth is .. the story line is great and all.. but IMHO .. i doubt an ordinary fella can build a space craft in his barn, highly impossible lor..!! and for the wife.. to give up all her inheritance.. to fulfill her husband crazy dream.. also kinda unbelieveable lor..! But Billy Thorton is in it.. ex-husband of Angelina Jolie.. and Virginia Madsen, very familiar face .. but not really that well-known to me.

Overall.. quite a ridiculous movie lor.. !! meaning unbelievable..!

For those who is wondering.. why i can’t cook local food.. from where i am.. since Canada.. has got so many immigrants .. from all over asia.. i have to clarify .. and let you know.. that i’m in this very small town.. and we do not have anything remotely asian to buy.. except oyster sauce.. and some supplements.

This town is so small.. it only has a population of 8000 ppl. Like i donch have kway teow here.. or belachan.. or alot of things lah..! so if you hear me complaining hor.. just ignore me.. ok.. !! hahahhahaha!!

I hate to be a B.I.T.C.H about it.. but sometimes.. it’s hard .. when the craving starts.. and i’m missing home… and all the comforts of a mamak store.. within 2 mins of walking distance.

To be honest with you .. after being in Canada for so many years.. and having so many bad health report.. from being diabetic .. to fibroids.. and then the TB scare.. you would understand.. why i am finally so relieve .. that they clear me of my health issues recently.

Nope.. i never knew i was diabetic till i came to Canada.. during one of my immigration check up..! when i did find out.. i thought my life was over..! i was devastated..!! I would pricked my fingers.. 4 times.. a day.. just to check my sugar level. And those strips ain’t cheap you know..! about 50 cents a strip.. !! so i was like spending 2 bucks a day.. just to check the sugar level. And nope.. medical insurance didn’t cover that..!!

I was talking to our asian bloggers.. about not having bolster cases here to buy in this small town of ours. Some have kindly offered to sew them for me.. and send them over to me..! so sweet eh..??

On Saturday after work.. we went to the Canadian store.. and i saw like a “sarong” for 3 bucks.. it was bright orange and with pokka dots, so i bought it .. and brought it over to grammie’s house on Sunday.. and asked her to sew the bolster case for Chloe.

I can’t buy the cloth from a regular drapery store.. because they are so ex. Many years ago.. i bought a lace curtain to cover the glass door of our house.. and it cost me 10 bucks.. for just a tiny wineey piece of cloth. It was ridiculous..!! From then on.. i donch dare to buy anything .. because it almost seems like they are treating me like a tourist.

Anyway.. Grammie will save the day.. and she will make some bolster cases for the brat…!! so that drooling can be washed away.. kekekekeke!!
